Greg Manifold of The Washington Post commissioned me to create a series of portraits for the 2016, 2020 and 2024 presidential campaigns. This has been an exciting project as the head/shoulders & full body portraits have had a variety of applications, from appearing on the Post's front page to social media cards, iWatch graphics and even a live-streamed, robot-drawn election night map.

Ben Kirchner has created the illustrations and adapted the text for a new re-imagining of The Night Before Christmas. The book celebrates the 200 year anniversary of the publication of Clement Moore's original poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas'.
Ben's adaptation takes place at the South Pole with a family of emperor penguins visited by a North Pole, polar bear Santa. The story is populated throughout with a cast of Antarctic birds and animals with spreads packed with drama and playful details.
The book is published by Boxer Books in the UK and Union Square in the US
Above: Opening spread
"Twas the night before Christmas, on a moonlit ice floe,
Not a creature was stirring above... or below..."
Having decided to set the story in Antarctica, Ben was keen to make sure the animals surrounding the emperor penguin family were fellow South Pole residents. Imperial shags, an orca, an hourglass dolphin, a southern elephant seal and an Antarctic sun starfish all set the scene on the opening spread, all deep in sleep on the night before Christmas
Ben Kirchner: "One of my favourite spreads is where the family are asleep in the igloo. I really enjoyed creating a sense of cosiness, and trying to translate traditional room elements into a penguin environment. A dog sleeping on a rug in front of the fire is now a seal pup sleeping in an ice hole"
Above: part of Ben's flatplan for the book
Ben Kirchner: "I wanted to create something fun and energetic that kids would enjoy with lots of action, slapstick and colourful characters. I love the work of midcentury kids' illustrators such as Richard Scarry and Mel Crawford - the sort of chaotic animal characters they create. I love the distinctive house style of Little Golden Books. It's always been an inspiration and the physicality of Scarry's animal characters - the way they often seem to be tumbling through the air"
Above:
"The reindeer touched down on the rooftop with ease,
But alas, down the chimney the bear could not squeeze!"
Santa's struggle with the igloo's chimney, the bursting buttons of Santa's coat and the sweat and grimaces of the reindeer set up for the antics that follow on the next spread
Above: vignette details of the Dad penguin and the family's 'pet' leopard seal
Ben Kirchner: "My idea for the 'Penguin Slide' came from my initial sketches for the penguin's ice house. One of my sketches reminded me of the classic toy, and inspired the idea of Santa sliding down the spiral chute and climbing back up the stairs.”
Above: Santa sliding down the helter-skelter
"He was dressed for the Arctic, which gave him some shielding,
(Antarctic ice can be hard and unyielding!)"
Ben Kirchner: "Once I had the idea of the penguin slide game, it was clear that I would need to revise the text in key places to make the concept work. I really enjoyed the process of coming up with new rhymes. It's obviously an adaptation, and much of Clement C Moore's beautiful poem remains but it was fun to put my own spin on the text.
Ben Kirchner: "I decided to find some new digital brushes at the start of this project. I wanted to make sure the work for the book was looser and less vector based than some of my editorial and other commercial work.
Above: The story comes full circle as the young penguins open the present Santa has delivered - the penguin ice house game, complete with Santa also taking a ride on the slide!
